Children under one year in age are classified as infants. In the Spanish tradition funerals for children are often accompanied by music and dancing in order to celebrate the child’s immediate assent into heaven without passing through purgatory. Because of this belief, the Spanish refer to these children as Angelitos or “little angels”.
The Spanish custom of wakes for children includes the use of a crown of flowers symbolically representing an angel's halo.
The biggest tragedy of a child's death is that the parents must bear two losses: the loss of their beloved child and the loss of the dreams and hopes that lived in their hearts for that child. This double loss makes the death of a child so difficult to discuss that it is nearly taboo.
